Despite finishing with one of the worst records in the NFL for the second consecutive year, there is real optimism in Cleveland. The latest draft class made an immediate impact and could play a key role in the team’s rebuild – a significant part of former head coach Kevin Stefanski’s legacy.
Although Stefanski was dismissed, his work in the draft proved outstanding. Defensive standouts Carson Schwesinger (second round) and Mason Graham (first round) became instant contributors within the defensive scheme and project as cornerstone players.
On offense, rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. recorded six touchdowns while leading the team in receptions and receiving yards during the 2025 season. Running back Quinshon Judkins added seven rushing touchdowns, providing further hope for the future.
Carson Schwesinger backs Shedeur Sanders
Shedeur Sanders was also a rookie last season and arguably faced the most pressure of anyone on the roster. The son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders started through Week 11 and showed flashes of first-round talent. However, he also displayed inconsistencies that have raised questions about his long-term future.
Still, he received strong public support from Schwesinger, who praised his poise and weekly growth while running the offense as a rookie – a task he described as extremely difficult.
“Being able to go in there and run the offense as a rookie, it’s a hard thing to do,” dijo Schwesinger sobre Sanders. “As somebody who’s calling the defense, I think doing that on offense is a much bigger job, but I have a little understanding of what it takes. Being able to do that with poise, and then seeing growth every week, that’s really what you can ask for.”
Sanders did not get first-team reps until the week he was named starter, which explains some of the inconsistency. Even so, he showed intriguing potential while facing elite opponents such as the Steelers, Bills, 49ers, and Bengals.
Heading into next season, Sanders is expected to compete for the starting job, primarily against Deshaun Watson. However, it would not be surprising if new head coach Todd Monken brings in another quarterback via free agency, as questions remain surrounding both current options.
