Is Bill Belichick poised to walk out on the North Carolina Tar Heels before even getting started in college football? The 72-year-old is yet to sign his contract, which is sparking rumors of a return to the NFL.

Fans were shocked when the six-time Super Bowl champion announced his switch to the NCAA considering he is just 13 wins from tying Don Shula as the winningest coach in the history of football.

Apparently giving up on that dream for a $10 million deal in the college ranks, Belichick essentially walked away from job openings with the likes of the Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets and Chicago Bears.

But could all that be set to change? CBS Sports claims he could have clauses in his contract allowing him to break out of his deal, should an NFL team come knocking for his talented services.

“Industry sources say that could lead to a legal gray area about how much, if any, of a buyout there would be if Belichick left for the pros,” writes CBS Sports.

Tar Heels’ GM denies Belichick doubts

Others have theorized Belichick only took on the job to set-up his son for a head coach post in college as his successor. Some have even gone as far as to say the ex-New England Patriot could even quit the Tar Heels should the Philadelphia Eagles or Buffalo Bills come knocking.

However, these claims were firmly denied by North Carolina’s general manager, Michael Lombardi, who insists there are no doubts of his signature but they are both simply doing going through procedure.

“We are not slow, just being diligent,” Lombardi wrote on X.com, formerly Twitter, slamming claims by Pro Football Talk. “[We] hired three people on Sunday.

“Not one is nervous other than this erroneous report. A completely fabricated story. thank you.”
