A historic performance from Bam Adebayo should have been remembered only for its place in the record books, however the massive scoring night is now surrounded by controversy across the National Basketball Association.
The Miami Heat center erupted for 83 points in a 150-129 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday, March 10 – a total that immediately entered NBA history while also prompting intense debate about how the performance unfolded.
Bam Adebayo‘s scoring output now ranks as the second-highest single-game total in league history, trailing only the famous 100-point night recorded by Wilt Chamberlain in 1962 with the Philadelphia Warriors.
The achievement also pushed Bam Adebayo past the iconic 81-point game delivered by Kobe Bryant for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Toronto Raptors in January 2006.
Despite the statistical milestone, skepticism has emerged among analysts and fans, largely because Bam Adebayo is not typically viewed as one of the league’s elite scorers despite being a multiple-time All-Star.
During the record night he finished with 83 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while also adding defensive production with two steals and two blocks across an offensive showcase rarely seen from a center.
The scoring surge began quickly as Bam Adebayo produced 31 points in the opening quarter and reached 43 points by halftime, already surpassing his previous career high of 41 before the night even ended.
He eventually finished the game shooting 20-of-43 from the field, including seven three-pointers, while also setting a remarkable mark at the free-throw line by converting 36 of his 43 attempts.
After the final buzzer Bam Adebayo reflected on the moment emotionally, thanking the people around him and acknowledging the support that helped him reach the historic total.
“They are like my second family, I couldn’t do it without them, thanks to the coach for drawing plays for me,” said Bam Adebayo, very emotional and surrounded by his teammates at the end of this historic match.
He also explained that the possibility of a record night first became clear once the scoring pace accelerated during the opening half of the game.
Bam Adebayo said that he began to see this feat possible when he had 43 points at halftime and did not hesitate to put this game at number one of the best of his career.
Tanking scandal threatens to overshadow Adebayo history
Much of the controversy surrounding the performance centers on the Washington Wizards‘ defensive approach, which critics argue appeared unusually passive during stretches of the matchup.
Observers pointed to the amount of space Bam Adebayo received in the paint, as well as the extraordinary number of free throws he attempted, which helped inflate the final scoring total.
Those factors have fueled renewed debate about “tanking,” a strategy in which struggling teams prioritize draft position rather than victories by fielding weaker lineups or playing with reduced urgency.
The discussion has become significant enough that Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, has repeatedly addressed concerns about teams intentionally losing to improve draft odds.
Because the Washington Wizards have struggled this season, some critics argue that the conditions of the game may have helped produce a scoring explosion that otherwise might not have occurred.
Bam Adebayo himself has previously spoken against the concept of tanking, emphasizing that teams should always pursue victories regardless of schedule difficulty or circumstances.
“We have to figure out how to win games consistently,” Bam Adebayo said. “No matter if it’s a back-to-back, four games in five nights, whatever.
“We have to find a way to win even against teams that, so to speak, are trying to lose.”
