The Los Angeles Lakers entered Monday night hoping to continue their strong early season momentum, but instead they were handed a humbling defeat by the Phoenix Suns.

What made the loss sting even more was the context. The Suns were without Jalen Green, and Devin Booker exited in the first half. That didn’t matter in the end as Phoenix dominated from start to finish, which put fans and analysts on alert.

After the game, guard Austin Reaves spoke candidly about what went wrong. Even though he chipped in with 16 points on the night, his play and that of his teammates was far from what the bar has been so far this season.

“One of those games. We played bad, they played harder than us. That cannot happen,” Reaves said, via Spectrum SportsNet.

His honesty reflected what many viewers saw: a Lakers squad that never matched Phoenix in urgency or energy. All you have to do is look at Luka Doncic’s performance: he finished with 38 points and 11 points, but he also had a season-high nine turnovers, while the Lakers finished with 22.

Los Angeles still sits at an impressive 15-5. Their start has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the season, particularly given the inconsistency they faced last year. However, the loss to Phoenix exposed an uncomfortable truth: the Lakers are still capable of letting games slip away early and failing to recover.

It was a familiar pattern from the previous season, one the team hoped it had left behind.

A night that exposed old problems

From the Lakers’ perspective, the defeat exposed fundamental flaws. As LeBron James himself summed up: “Turnovers, transition points – and obviously, on our home floor and against a disruptive defense like that, you can’t turn the ball over that much.”

Looking ahead, Los Angeles will hope to treat this game as a turning point rather than a trend. The road trip looms, with the next challenge being a match against the Toronto Raptors. Coming out of this humbling defeat, effort and focus will need to become non-negotiable once again.

As Reaves frankly stated, “that can’t happen.” For a team with the talent and aspirations of the Lakers, nights like these must remain rare or else the margin for error shrinks remarkably fast.
