Los Angeles still sits at an impressive 15-5. Their start has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the season, particularly given the inconsistency they faced last year. However, the loss to Phoenix exposed an uncomfortable truth: the Lakers are still capable of letting games slip away early and failing to recover.
It was a familiar pattern from the previous season, one the team hoped it had left behind.
A night that exposed old problems
From the Lakers’ perspective, the defeat exposed fundamental flaws. As LeBron James himself summed up: “Turnovers, transition points – and obviously, on our home floor and against a disruptive defense like that, you can’t turn the ball over that much.”
Looking ahead, Los Angeles will hope to treat this game as a turning point rather than a trend. The road trip looms, with the next challenge being a match against the Toronto Raptors. Coming out of this humbling defeat, effort and focus will need to become non-negotiable once again.
As Reaves frankly stated, “that can’t happen.” For a team with the talent and aspirations of the Lakers, nights like these must remain rare or else the margin for error shrinks remarkably fast.
