It was a bad day for Club America and their fans. Las Aguilas were eliminated at the last minute by Monterrey when the Rayados team had 10 men on the field. The elimination hurts, but that’s not all. There are fans who are outraged and angry with the team for some actions taken before the match.
Prior to the second leg of the quarterfinals of the playoffs, the club published on its social networks the information related to the Meet & Greet they would have with former players at Walmart Supercenter in Houston, Texas, within the event called ‘America in America’
These former players are Angel Reyna and Aquivaldo Mosquera, who were promoted as Americanista “legends”. The anger of fans was not long in coming. In the first place, they were angry because they considered it insensitive that America was dedicated to promoting the Meet & Greet just on the day that more encouragement was required for the most important match of the tournament; it was necessary to turn around the 0-2 received in the first leg against Rayados
From the official account, when there are hours to go before a quarter-final where you are losing, and you can end up in a ridiculous situation
Secondly, and most relevantly, they were annoyed and outraged because they promoted as legends two former members of the team who did not reach that level to be considered as such.
For the fans, legends are Antonio Carlos Santos, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Luis Roberto Alves ‘Zague’, Alfredo Tena, Adrian Chavez, Ivan Zamorano, Claudio ‘Piojo’ Lopez, Cristobal Ortega. That Reyna and Mosquera should be measured in the same way seems an insult to the Americanistas.
To put Reyna as an America legend (he played in 300 other teams, including Chivas, Toluca and Rayados, and outside of “his” scoring title, he left nothing
They pointed out that it was a bad time to market the official products offered in the United States with a poor choice of adjectives to refer to two former players that Americanismo remembers without esteem and affection.
There were a few who were cautious before the game against Monterrey, so they called for restraint because they could be eliminated. That fear manifested itself in the day and became reality at night. Rayados were America’s executioner hours after the signing session with Reyna and Mosquera was announced with great fanfare.
Reyna’s affront is not forgotten
During the 2012 Clausura Tournament, America lost in stoppage time against Monterrey 3-2. The author of the winning goal for Rayados was Angel Reyna. To celebrate his goal, the then player replicated Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s famous celebration in a clear mockery of the American fans. That gesture marked a complete break with the fans, who to this day do not forgive him for what he did.
