Major League Baseball teams are three weeks away from reporting for Spring Training ahead of the 2025 MLB season, and Alex Bregman remains the most sought-after free agent on the winter market.

The offseason has been a nightmare for Bregman and Pete Alonso, two star players represented by agent Scott Boras, who have not had the same fortune as Juan Soto, who was not only his best client this year, but the Dominican signed the most lucrative contract in MLB history, 15 years and $765 million, to break the record that had been set by Shohei Ohtani with the Dodgers a season earlier.

Bregman is 31 years old, coming off a 26-home run season with the Houston Astros and part of the difficulty in not signing a contract in this free agency is that according to The Athletic, he is seeking a seven-year, $189 million deal, while other sources claim that the third baseman is looking for six years and $200 million.

Alex Bregman turned down a big offer from the Astros

The background to Alex Bregman‘s uncomfortable situation began after he rejected an offer from the Astros for six years and $156 million, which was not far from his aspirations and, at the time, it was warned that he might regret it and, apparently, he already did, according to baseball analyst Bruce Levine on his podcast @670The Score.

“According to his friend, he regretted doing it. There is talk that he may return to Houston,” Levine said on his podcast, after negotiations to move to the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs did not prosper.

According to Dana Brown, general manager of the Astros, it is unlikely that he will sign for now, but the possibility is “ajar”, after negotiations with the Boston Red Sox also cooled, although interest has now been reported from the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays.

“It’s probably a long shot, but the fact that he’s a free agent, we’ll have discussions about him like we have discussions about any other free agent,” Dana Brown said Saturday.
