Patrick Mahomes Sr., the former MLB pitcher and father of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, is seeking legal permission to travel for a sports card convention in Minnesota next month. However, due to his ongoing probation following a DUI conviction, his request is currently under review by a Texas judge.
The convention, scheduled for April 12-13, is an opportunity for Mahomes Sr. to capitalize on his name recognition and connect with sports fans. But his legal restrictions mean he must first obtain approval before leaving Texas. TMZ Sports reports that the judge has yet to make a decision on the request.
If he is allowed to travel, Mahomes Sr. will have to adhere to strict probation conditions, including taking a mandatory urine test upon his return. This latest legal hurdle follows a series of personal and professional controversies that have kept him in the public eye for reasons beyond his baseball career.
Fight with John Rocker scrapped after family intervention
Before seeking permission for the sports card convention, Mahomes Sr. was preparing for a much different type of public event-a boxing match against former MLB pitcher John Rocker. The bout was originally set to take place on April 19 as part of Barstool Sports’ Rough N’ Rowdy fight series.
However, the match was abruptly canceled just days after Mahomes Sr. and Rocker were seen engaging in a staged altercation outside a New Orleans bar-a publicity stunt meant to promote the fight. Despite the hype, Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy revealed that Mahomes Jr. and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, may have influenced the decision to call it off.
“Mahomes’ agent, [the football player], and Brittany-from what I am told-intervened and were like, ‘There’s no way this fight’s happening,'” Portnoy said on a podcast. “‘We’re going to cut this guy off if he does it.'”
Portnoy expressed frustration, believing the fight had significant entertainment value.
“Listen, if they want to fight, let them fight,” he added.
