Amid ongoing speculation surrounding Aaron Rodgers’ future in the NFL, a new report has surfaced suggesting that the veteran quarterback may already have a secret agreement in place with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, Steelers insider Josh Hathhorn claimed during a Wednesday broadcast that Rodgers has quietly finalized a deal with Pittsburgh.
The report has not been confirmed by Rodgers or the Steelers organization, but it has reignited discussion around the quarterback’s next move.
“Our Steelers insider @jhathhorn says on @937theFan that Aaron Rodgers has a secret deal done with the Steelers. Wow,” Fillipponi wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Rodgers, 41, previously met with Steelers officials and coaching staff on March 21 at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. While no contract was publicly announced following that visit, sources indicated the meeting was focused on discussions around game strategy, team culture, and Rodgers‘ expectations if he were to join the franchise.
Shift in options narrows focus on Pittsburgh
Prior to the reported interest from the Steelers, Rodgers had been linked with the Minnesota Vikings.
Despite the Vikings selecting J.J. McCarthy in the 2025 NFL Draft, there were indications Rodgers still considered the team a viable destination. Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah acknowledged that a backup role for Rodgers was discussed, but ultimately, the focus appeared to shift away from a formal deal.
With other options reportedly closing, Pittsburgh has emerged as the most likely landing spot for the four-time NFL MVP. Sources close to the team suggest that Rodgers has already held informal throwing sessions with Steelers wide receivers, including DK Metcalf-further fueling speculation that a move to Pittsburgh may already be in motion.
Steelers owner Art Rooney II recently described the team’s talks with Rodgers as “positive,” indicating optimism that a formal agreement could be announced in the near future.
Quarterback situation remains fluid
The Steelers have faced persistent instability at the quarterback position since Ben Roethlisberger‘s retirement. In the 2024 season, the team rotated through several options, including Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, both of whom are no longer with the organization.
In March, Pittsburgh re-signed former quarterback Mason Rudolph to a two-year, $7.5 million contract. Head coach Mike Tomlin expressed confidence in Rudolph‘s ability to lead the team, telling reporters at the league’s annual meetings, “That’s why we brought him back. We’ve been there before. He’s a very capable guy.”
General manager Omar Khan echoed that sentiment, stating, “I have a lot of confidence in Mason.”
However, if the report about Rodgers is accurate, the team’s public stance may be a placeholder as it prepares for a major acquisition. Should Rodgers join the Steelers, it would dramatically reshape the quarterback depth chart and expectations for the 2025 season.
