The budding connection between Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers has been unfolding slowly but steadily. While the veteran quarterback’s recent visit to Steelers headquarters didn’t culminate in a deal, an unexpected development now hints at a possible future for Rodgers in the black and gold.

Following his abrupt departure from the New York Jets, Rodgers has been linked to several teams. However, both the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants have opted to pursue other options, leaving Rodgers with limited prospects to stay active in the upcoming season.

Among these prospects, the Steelers stand out. On March 21, Rodgers spent six hours at the team’s facility. Although the visit didn’t immediately result in a contract, a recent workout with Pittsburgh’s rising star DK Metcalf suggests Rodgers’ return to the field may not be off the table.

Could Metcalf be the key to bringing Rodgers to Pittsburgh?

NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo shed light on the situation during the latest episode of Good Morning Football. He reported that Rodgers and Metcalf held a throwing session at UCLA’s training facility, which may represent a pivotal moment in Rodgers’ journey toward signing with the Steelers.

Rodgers is going through the process and checking all the boxes. I’m assuming it was a good session, so let’s see if A-Rod says, ‘Yeah, I like that guy, I like that target right there,'”Garafolo said.

It’s important to note that Pittsburgh lost all three of its previous quarterbacks-Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen-in free agency. To fill the void, the team signed Mason Rudolph to a two-year contract and extended Skylar Thompson with a reserve/future deal.

Pittsburgh urgently needs a QB1

Despite Rudolph’s return, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin emphasized the team’s need for a definitive QB1. “Whether it’s free agency and/or the draft, we’re doing our due diligence and communicating with some free agents,” Tomlin stated.

Among those free agents is Rodgers. However, the Steelers seem content to give him the time and space to make his decision. “I don’t know that we’ve approached it from a deadline perspective. As I mentioned, you’d like to have settled circumstances, but deadlines don’t often bring that to a head,” Tomlin explained.

As Garafolo suggested, Rodgers’ workout with Metcalf could mark another step closer to his induction into the Steelers. The ball is now firmly in Rodgers’ court, but his options for the upcoming season appear increasingly limited.
