Juan Soto has become, unwittingly, the central figure of MLB fans’ mockery and all thanks to an Instagram post and a rivalry that never dies. After the collapse of the New York Mets, who were left out of the playoffs on the last day of the season, the Dominican superstar posted a story of his well-deserved vacation with a clear destination: “Cancun”.
While there is nothing wrong with a trip to the beach, the post quickly became a massive meme. In the American sports world, especially the NBA, the phrase “going to Cancun” is code for a team’s early elimination from the postseason. The joke went viral just hours before his former team, the New York Yankees, found themselves in a critical situation.
David Ortiz’s taunts
The Yankees’ situation got worse when they fell 2-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays, being outscored 23-8 in the first two games. Taking advantage of the moment, Red Sox legend David Ortiz sat on the MLB on Fox set alongside Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez and threw out the phrase that says it all: “You can resurrect Jesus and you’re still going to Cancun.”
This statement tied the fate that many fans now predict for the Yankees and the focus has begun to shift to their captain, Aaron Judge.
Will Judge be the next victim?
Despite Soto leaving the Yankees to sign a multi-million dollar contract with the Mets, fans have begun to link the New York star outfielder’s fate with the escape of his former teammate.
Judge’s problems in the postseason have been notorious, with fans already mocking his performance. But the situation worsened on Sunday, when Judge added to the collective embarrassment by misjudging a fly ball at a crucial moment, allowing the out to turn into a costly error.
With elimination just around the corner in Game 3, MLB fans were quick to react to Soto’s post, suggesting that the Yankees captain would be the next to arrive in the Riviera Maya.
While for many fans, Judge should already be buying tickets to go to the beach, the team has one chance left to prove that they are still in the race or they will end up proving the fans right.
