A Juan Soto dejà vu threatens Yankees if they go for Tarik Skubal

The New York Yankees are once again at the center of MLB rumors. After the experience with Juan Soto, who arrived via trade and became a free agent, a similar scenario now arises with Tarik Skubal

The Detroit Tigers ace would be a luxury addition to the rotation in 2026, but his contract expires at the end of that season, raising questions about the investment and the risk of losing him without an extension.

Skubal, an ace who could change the rotation

The left-hander Tarik Skubal is coming off a dominant campaign, with a 2.21 ERA and more than 240 strikeouts, establishing himself as one of the best pitchers in the league. For the Yankees, his arrival would mean forming an elite rotation alongside Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Max Fried. However, insiders warn that Detroit and Skubal are more than $250 million apart in negotiations, increasing the possibility of a trade before the start of 2026.

The risk of dejà vu with Juan Soto

The situation is reminiscent of the case of Juan Soto, who arrived in a mega trade and ended up testing free agency. If the Yankees acquire Skubal without securing an extension, they could face the same outcome: losing a star after sacrificing prospects and young talent. The projected cost includes names such as Spencer Jones, Jasson Dominguez and arms such as Luis Gil or Will Warren, key pieces for the future of the club.

Two untouchables in the equation

Despite the pressure to bolster the rotation, there are two players the Yankees will not put on the table: Aaron Judge, the captain and face of the franchise, and young pitcher Cam Schlittler, who is considered an essential part of the long-term plan. Any negotiations will have to revolve around prospects and players with less media weight.

Is the move worth it?

With the 2026 season shaping up to be a make-or-break year for Brian Cashman‘s tenure, a move for Skubal could be the blow that returns the Yankees to the top. However, the financial and sporting risk is clear: without an extension, the team could repeat Soto’s story. The question is clear: will they risk the future for a year of dominance in the rotation?
