The New York Yankees may have just missed their chance to take the team to another level, watching a key signing they might not have even had on their radar slip away.
That player is Eugenio Suárez, who ended up signing with the Cincinnati Reds for one year and $15 million. Yes, the same hitter who crushed 49 home runs in 2025 and could have been the solution to the Yankees’ third base problem.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the deal between Suárez and the Reds includes a mutual option, opening the door for a longer stay with the franchise where he smashed 189 home runs between 2015 and 2021.
Meanwhile, the New York Yankees roster currently features Ryan McMahon, who arrived at the trade deadline and struggled offensively, posting a disappointing .208 batting average. While his defense has been solid, his bat has provided almost no offensive production.
What makes the situation even more striking is the financial comparison: McMahon is owed $16 million per season through 2027, while Eugenio Suárez signed for $15 million after driving in 118 RBIs between Seattle and Arizona.
A contract tailor-made for the Yankees
The structure of Eugenio Suárez’s contract with Cincinnati would have fit New York perfectly: a short-term deal with flexibility thanks to the mutual option. Instead, it became one of the missed opportunities of the Yankees’ offseason.
In the end, the Reds clearly come out ahead. And it’s hard to say the Yankees truly lost this move-because, by all indications, they never even made the call.
