One of the craziest storylines of the 2025 NFL season came from the San Francisco 49ers organization. Recovering from a torn ACL was always going to take time for star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, but he apparently wasn’t doing his part in the recovery process. Citing missed rehab sessions, the 49ers voided the guaranteed money left in Aiyuk’s contract.
With that drastic step taken by the team, Aiyuk was in no rush to get back to the gridiron. Ultimately, he didn’t play in all of the 2026 season. The player-team relationship seems to be beyond repair, putting general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan in a tough position.
The team could really use a wide receiver of Aiyuk’s caliber, but a decision has already been made: Aiyuk will be released by the team. That is, unless they can actually get back something in return for him.
Adam Schefter says 49ers will hold out on releasing Brandon Aiyuk, in hopes of a trade materializing
ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently spoke about the situation, opining that the Niners are in absolutely no rush to release Aiyuk yet. With Aiyuk’s contract guarantees voided, the franchise can do what it pleases with Aiyuk for a while. They ultimately control his destiny.
With that in mind, San Francisco will now take their time to find the right trade partner and try to recoup as much value as possible. Everything points to the Washington Commanders as the likeliest landing spot, due to Aiyuk’s strong relationship with quarterback Jayden Daniels.
One 49ers fan has another idea, though. Instead of giving Aiyuk what he wants, the team could keep him on the roster and suspend him if he doesn’t comply with the team’s rules. That would surely be a toxic situation, but it goes to show that Aiyuk has lost all of his leverage.
That’s extremely unlikely to happen, though. Aiyuk will be on another team’s roster for the 2026 season; it just might take a while to get there, as Lynch and Shanahan hold all the cards.
