It’ll be a miracle once the Saints select their starting quarterback.
In one corner, they have Spencer Rattler, who went 0-6 as a rookie starter last year. In the other corner is rookie Tyler Shough, a second-round pick with a wealth of college experience.
So, who will take the first snap come Week 1?
Check out the odds at FanDuel Sportsbook as of Aug. 20.
QB to take first snap for Saints in regular-season Week 1
Spencer Rattler: -260 (bet $10 to win $13.85 total)
Tyler Shough: +186 (bet $10 to win $28.60 total)
Heading into the preseason, New Orleans was one of three teams with an open QB competition, along with the Colts and Browns. But Indy and Cleveland have already made their choices, naming Daniel Jones and Joe Flacco as starters, respectively.
That leaves the Saints as the only team still undecided.
Moore addressed the competition with reporters earlier this week.
“It’s really, really close — numbers, experiences, reps, everything. It’s going all the way back to the start of training camp. Everything is very, very close between this group. We’ll see how it all plays out.”
Last season was memorable for all the wrong reasons in N.O. It finished 5-12 — its worst record since 2005 — with Rattler going winless in his six starts after Derek Carr’s injury.
Both Rattler and Shough have had chances this preseason. Rattler, a fourth-round pick in 2024, has completed 71.4% of his passes for 252 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Shough is right behind him, completing 70.6% of his throws for 231 yards, one TD and one pick.
Shough, who turns 26 next month, played seven college seasons at Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville. He threw for a career-high 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns in his final year with the Cardinals.
As for Jake Haener, he’s a long shot at +5500. The third-year pro has just one career start, completing four of 10 passes for 49 yards and an interception.
